The Principality of Andorra is a small independent state located in the Pyrenees, in Southern Europe, between France and Spain. Here the mountains are high, the snow abundant and the sun omnipresent all the year round because of the Mediterranean orientation of the country. In spite of its small surface area –only 468 km2- it would be hard to imagine a greater concentration of highlights: the unlimited offer of entertainment and leisure activities, the excellent gourmet cuisine, the bewitching night life and, naturally, the snow and the mountains which are the core of Andorra.
The first ski resort in Andorra was officially inaugurated in 1957. It was a simple ski lift in Pas de la Casa powered by a lorry engine. Today there are two large skiable domains: Grandvalira and Vallnord, with a total of 110 ski lifts carrying over 156,000 skiers per hour. More than 60 years after the installation of its first ski lift, Andorra now hosts major international winter sports events, such as the ski mountaineering world cup this year.
